I've heard a lot about Umezu so when I wanted a horror manga, he was my first call. I'm a little disappointed by the often crude looking figures and the pretty simplistic character actions but I'll stick with it because there are moments of real dread in there.

A weak start to a series with a fun hook.

It's a really well done 70s thriller manga like yeah the teachers were rather scummy and all the kids just want is to be reunited with their families. This has really good original storytelling from Umezu-san and would recommend to ppl to check this out even if it is old skool!

This first volume was overall really cool, although there were a few parts that felt dated or didn't seem to trigger the intended emotional reaction in me. I've never seen an artstyle that is as pregnant with menace and a sheer oppressive heaviness as Umezu-sensei's. It's been months since I've read this first volume, and it still intrigues me; I plan on continuing to read the series when I get the chance.

This story has stayed fresh in my mind since I first read it all the way through, and now I'm taking the time to give it a second read, without rushing through it like I did the first time. Even though the basic premise of the story is wonderfully intriguing and disturbing, it's definitely the way the story is told that gives it life. The art and pacing imbues even tiny details and inconsequential moments with meaning, creating a whole world soaked in both dread and hope all the way through.

This was a fascinating start to a series, but the art style was a little too dark and harsh for me.  I also didn't like Lord of the Flies that much, and the violence that goes with it is also not for me.

An interesting start! A lot happens very quickly in this volume, so I’m not sure where I think it will go next. Definitely very absurd and does it’s best to be shocking.
