This was at certain points pretty wild, but ultimately it's a very forgettable read to me. I'd didn't really get a fleshed out sense of the characters, not the side characters (which I find is very normal within this genre), but also not the two main characters Cassandra and Alex. They are kind of boring considering the snippets of backstory you get in the book. Cassandra starting out as the poorest of the poor in London and working her way up as a conwoman. And Alex who've had a loveless but privileged childhood with cold and distant parents, where the father placed a mountain of expectations on him. Like those two sounds like some interesting characters on paper. But this is very much a book that is rich in action, but because the characters come off as so boring, and none of their traumas are really dealt with (with the exception of the old "love solve all the problems") this book becomes really forgettable. Like okay while reading, but I'll forget I read it in a couple of weeks.

I think I'm just not in the right mood for historicals right now. This was perfectly fine and the characters are interesting together. Cassandra's life of growing up on the streets forces Alex to reconsider some of his privileges. Unfortunately, it's pretty surface level.

It's actually been ages since I finished this book but I remember enjoying it perfectly well! I like the premise a lot and I enjoyed the forced proximity/lovers to enemies to lovers aspects.

The smut is strong in this one, and I mean it in the best possible way. Sexy times are exciting but they don’t happen often enough so that they become repetitive and boring.

It was a ton of fun. The hero was an uptight tuff, just ripe to have his heart broken. But, dear goodreaders, he was never an asshole. The person who suffered most from his rigidness was his own self. It was a great adventure to see him lose what he thought was his core identity. And say naughty words.

The heroine, in turn, was strong and capable but aware of her weaknesses too and when it was right to ask and hope for help.

It was a relief to read a romance when people didn’t act like complete idiots just to create the necessary drama and move the plot along.

Wow, way to make me fall in love with a heroine! Cassandra Blake is a con artist who has been conned. She reveals herself to the Duke of Greyland, once a mark, because she is in danger of loving him. He agrees to help her despite the betrayal. They're both hurting but clearly work together so well. I loved them so much!

Eva Leigh launches a seductive new series that sizzles with the dark secrets of London’s underworld...

Years ago, the Duke of Greyland gave his heart—and a princely sum of money—to a charming, destitute widow with unparalleled beauty. After one passionate night, she slipped from his bed and vanished without a trace. And just when he’s given up hope of ever seeing her again, Greyland finds her managing a gaming hell. He’s desperate to have her… until he discovers everything about his long-lost lover was a lie.

In truth, Cassandra Blake grew up on the streets, picking pockets to survive. Greyland was a mark—to be fleeced and forgotten—but her feelings for the duke became all too real. Once he learns of her deception, however, the heat in his eyes turns to ice. When her business partner absconds with the gaming hell proceeds—leaving unsavory investors out for blood—Cassandra must beg the man she betrayed for help.

Greyland wants compensation, too, and he’ll assist her under one condition: she doesn’t leave his sight until her debts are paid. But it’s not long before the real Cassandra—the smart, streetwise criminal—is stealing his heart all over again.

I was determined not to like Cassandra. She fleeced the Grayson and broke his heart! She's a swindler but only out of necessity!. She's not willing to be a victim of her circumstances.

He was such a stick in the mud, a product of Society but you could see his emotions waiting to break free. I really enjoyed these characters and am looking forward to the others!

This book felt like a missed opportunity. It doesn't bring much to the genre.
The characters are lacking depth. We barely scratch to the surface of all the potential we could have with Cassandra and the underworld.
Alex realizing the privilege of his own classe compare to hers felt just like a repeat of many HR before this one, without bringing more to the table.
I really wanted to like this book because I loved her novella from the DILTF anthology, but it's an other miss (after Waiting for a Scot Like You). But one thing Eva Leigh excel at is writing kinky-hot-dirt-talk sex scenes.
