Chaotic and lacking structure. So much rambling about the same thing for so many pages that did absolutely nothing to advance the plot.
I enjoyed the Spanglish though. For me, that was the only thing that gave the narrator a unique voice, although it could have been used in a much better way.

There are books that touch the most tender and raw places of my heart and this book was one of them. Something about complicated mother-daughter relationships with a touch of religion, homosexuality, and immigration that just do it for me. Francisca is trying to make sense of their new home in the US only made worse when her family embeds themselves deeply into their new religious community. Failing to connect to her mother and meet her mother's expectations she falls for Carmen, the youth group leader, and as a byproduct into Jesus Christ. There's such a loneliness in wanting something so bad, you convince yourself it's what you want. And that was my most prevalent feeling reading this book: loneliness. And I vibed with that so hard, resonating with a character so lost attempting to find herself whereever she fits.
