This novel was a very quick read that follows a mostly nameless pickpocket as the protagonist. Even as a reader knowing that stealing is considered "wrong" I felt sorry for the narrator and justified his reasoning for his acts. This novel is dark in tone, the lives of the characters are sad for various reasons which adds to the overall mood and empathy I gave them. The antagonist however is truly evil, and I think that Nakamura captured how dark the character was very well. As a whole I quite enjoyed this read and would recommend it if you are looking for a fast paced page turner.
I read the e-book version of this novel and although the book was translated well to adapt to English, I did find a few simple spelling errors and word choices to be off in regards to the context of what was happening in the story.
