A fun origin story of the second (third?) Batgirl.

Batman is gone, Dick is Batman now, Damian is Robin, and Barbara is Oracle.

Stephanie Brown has a past as Spoiler (that I don’t know much about), and a daytime life as a new college student. At night, she tries to be Batgirl, and pretty much everyone is against it. Soon enough she gets an ally in Oracle, the first Batgirl, and they take on crime while fighting their own demons, and of course having some fun banter the whole time.

It’s not gonna make me go read every Stephanie Brown Batgirl comic out there, but it was an entertaining story.

I know. Blasphemy, right? How can you be such a huge Stephanie Brown fan and not have read her Batgirl run? Well, that's remedied now. Also, it really should have been called Batgirl & Oracle-that's who this story's about.

Surprise! I loved it! Like most Batgirl stories, it's kinda dark, but uplifting. It's all about believing in yourself and really, isn't that the best message? I think my favorite scenes were the ones between Steph and Damian. I've really come around to him. I can't wait for them to publish the second volume so I can spend money on that, too!

This is a sentimental 5 stars because I really loved this era of comics. It's a good collection and shows that Stephanie is a unique character. She's not great at being Batgirl, but she's intuitive and tries hard. She usually gets good results, even if her plans are flawed. There's something endearing about that. I'm glad they are collecting all these like this. I'm eagerly anticipating volume 2.

For the most part I found this volume to be a little rudderless, compared to the strong start. It sure ends with a wallop though. That won me back. Whether as Spoiler, Robin or Batgirl, I've always found Stephanie Brown to be a compelling character. It's a shame DC can't figure out what to do with her, but I guess that's about the least of their problems now.
