Sooooooo good that I stayed up much later than I should have finishing the entire thing. My favourite Vicky Bliss of the series yet.

This book makes it clear that what Peters writes best about (and clearly loves to write about most) is Egypt. Vicky Bliss is a fun character but this one dragged for me. Makes a great beach read.

Egyptologist Barbara Mertz wrote under the pseudonym Elizabeth Peters about a medieval art historian named Vicky Bliss who pretended to be an Egyptologist walking in the footsteps of Amelia Peabody Emerson, another of Mertz's characters. Egyptian revolutionaries, international antiquities smugglers, international police, Vicky's boss, Vicky's lover and his new bride, and her potential mother-in-law are all out to either get/protect her. It was fun and frantic, but everything happened for a reason. Not tangled, in fact, but densely woven.

Spoilers!

The Vicky Bliss book where she and John finally overcome their fantastic, books-long aversion to love and finally admit their feelings for each other. I love the emotional arc in this.

John and Vicky might be my favourite romance couple of all time.

The last of three books borrowed from mom. Wow did I really underestimate how many books I would go through on vacation. Unfortunately, this one was only slightly less marginal than the other two. Again I did not have a connection with the series character, which does not inspire me to try again.

3.5 stars. Fun, as all the Vicky Bliss books are, but definitely not the strongest in the series.

I have to admit, for the first half of this book I had half a mind to just put it down and walk away from this series altogether. I should have known better, should have known that Peters would make things right. And she did, of course.

Another great story in the Vicky Bliss saga. Only one left to go, I do wonder where Peters will take us to in the end. What will happen to Vicky and John?

Thought this book's another failure compared to Peabody's. Having a lover like John Smythe is cool!
