This is a really good book. I’d like to come back to it. It’s a strong case of “right book, wrong time”. I just lost my momentum with it and then fell into a book slump.

As much as I wanted to love this, it did not grab my attention in the way I had hoped.

There was something about this book that made it really difficult for me to immerse myself in it. I felt like I constantly KNEW I was reading. I also really struggled with the relationship developments of this story. Maybe I just like a good slow burn, but the change from strangers to lovers was extremely abrupt for me. Remy spends a significant potion of this book bogged with thoughts of self doubt, which is fine except for the fact that I kind of agreed with him. I had a hard time caring about the characters and did not feel emotionally invested in them.

The plot itself was excellent though. There is very little down time and Chupeco keeps it moving the whole book. I enjoyed the little twists the story took. The vibes of this story are excellent and very much do match with Castlevania.

Overall, I can see myself reading the following books in the series. I rated 3 stars because this book does several things that I inherently enjoy, even if I was unimpressed with the delivery of this specific book.

Where do I even begin with this book? In May I read Rin Chupecco’s other book The Sacrifice and I really enjoyed it. I was expecting to enjoy this one just as much. I did not.
The story focuses on Remy who is a vampire hunter that is a disgrace on the hunters he works for. He gets in the middle of vampire drama and the story goes on from there.
What I liked
•I liked the romance. I honestly don’t understand their reasoning for liking Remy but I did like it. That “again” chapter was reeeeaaal good.
•Some parts of the story kept me wanting to read more.

What I didn’t like
•Remy. I don’t see the hype with this man. He pulls all the hottest people by doing nothing. There is literally nothing that makes him likable but everyone falls for him and cares for home when the rest of the world hates him.
•the writing. This is such a shocker to me because I loved the writing in The Sacrifice but this one was hard to swallow. It was so clunky, didn’t flow at all. You could tell Chupecco was writing with a British accent in mind but it feel forced and not natural. Especially the curse words. They felt out of place for a fantasy setting in a Victorian type era.
•the romance. I know I liked it but at the same time I also didn’t because I don’t understand how two awesome people could love Remy. I just don’t get it!
•the plot. It was all over the place. Sometimes I was interested but other times I couldn’t care less and when that happens I put the book down.
•the ending. Talk about a let down. A severe let down. I was so disappointed with that ending. I wanted to DNF this book much earlier but forced myself to see if it got better. It didn’t. I’m glad I finished it but at the same time I know I could’ve been satisfied with stopping midway.

Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an arc for an honest review

DNF. I tried to read something else by this author a long time ago for a book club, but DNFed it because it was boring me to tears. But this ARC came along and I wanted for it to be different. But I just can't. I'm bored. I just can't drum up any interest for Remy. We're getting no personality of any kind and I just don't care about him. Bah.

I feel like everything in this book was bland, the characters, the plot, the reveals, everything, all of it was bland. I was never bothered in caring when our protagonist faced problems because they easily overcame them, there was never any real danger, no consequences, nothing. As a reader I never felt shocked or surprised when important things were revealed because those things were always delivered in the most simplest and uninteresting way, not even the characters seemed to care, that says a lot.
