I actually had no idea what I was getting into when I picked this one up, just needed a queer vampire book for one of my reading challenges for the year. And I've enjoyed some of Chupeco's YA fantasy, so I was interested in seeing her foray into the adult fantasy world. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed!

There is some excellent romantic chemistry between the three main characters, and I liked the detective/mystery energy that the rot investigation brought. I do think overall, the book is a little longer than it needs to be because it feels like it drags a bit at the end. There's a pretty good hook for the sequel, so I might actually pick that one up to see where the story goes next!

I'm kind of disappointed. I really liked the first half of this book, but the second half was a letdown for me. I think the author was too ambitious and, at the same time, not ambitious enough. They wanted to do too much, but I felt that the story lacked depth, with many pages of nothing that added to it. I feel that the book had little plot to hold it together; the villains, etc, and it would have been better if it was one bigger book or at least the first one could have been shorter.

I have to say that I liked the romance, but I also feel that it wasn't explored well enough. In the first part, I could feel more tension between the three characters than later. Also, Zidan and Remy felt a little off compared to Remy and Xiaodan, as the two didn't have as many fully romantic moments as Remy and Xiaodan did.

Furthermore, I think the author could have leaned more into the adult aspects of it, with more gore, more danger, and even sex. I have to say, sex is not something I look for in books, but I feel that the way it was written didn't do any favors for building the romance and tension between the three.

Also, I get it that Remy is insecure, and he has reasons for it, don't get me wrong, but it gets tiring to read he being insecure over and over again.

Lastly, I was quite uncomfortable with the fact that Remy's father "sold" his own son with sexual favors for information and status, and Giselle, the woman that abused him, was treated as just his past lover at the end. I get that it's Remy's point of view, and maybe he has to come to terms with the fact that he was a victim, but I still felt that this was only mentioned once and then ignored.

I don't know if I make sense, but I still had a good time, and I will read the second book, and hopefully, some things I pointed out are more explored.

Remy is stupid. He knows it but last time he checked intelligence wasn't a requirement to be a Reaper. And everyone treats him like shit because they think he's a half-vampire. It's maddening to see him save people who don't give a shit about him time and time again. Like have some self-respect...

Malekh is an intelligent doctor. And their dynamic with Remy is something to behold. Xiaodan isn't particularly smart but she cares deeply about people.

That's one of the few romance book where there's chemistry AND character development. Sometimes it's frustrating to see characters refuse to communicate. I can see why but come on... At the end they FINALLY talk think out like adults they are.

There's also politics and I don't think it was writen well. Part of it is each character having half a dozen names and titles. It took me half the book to figure out Zidan and Malekh are the same person give me a break pls. And part of it is that Remy doesn't care for politics. I really wanted to be invested in politics but I just couldn't. There's way too many side characters with little page time.

I really wish it has a character list at the beginning.

I am gonna read book 2 eventually.

My first read for the 2024 Trans Rights Readathon!

I really enjoyed this book! I love these characters so much especially Remy. Remy is a such a wonderful character I was instantly attached to him. His struggles with his past, feeling as though he owes his father everything, the way he feels that no one loves him without needing something from him in return. My heart hurt for him immensely.

The only reason I’m not giving this book 5 stars is because of Zidan and Remys back and forth. How many times were really necessary to try and put something between them? I get it, in a way, it benefited Zidan and Remys characters to show some of their biggest flaws but at the same time it was kinda frustrating to watch it happen multiple times.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the sequel!

A few parts I got one of confused, but overall very enjoyable. Whole thing reads like a movie, there’s a montage scene that I could visualize so nice as a movie montage, very fun!

The first few chapters are a bit hard to grasp, as theres a ton of new names, cities, etc thrown at you. But after that the story is incredibly immersive and you grow to love Remy and the other characters. I'm excited for book two.
