[new favourite]

This is exactly my kind of book. Adult high fantasy with a complex plot (including fantasy politics!!) and world building, loveable, well developed characters, and some queer (!) romance.

I especially loved how none of these elements felt forced or unnecessary! Each was given its room in the book, without another coming short.

Remy, the MC, is so precious. Then his developing relationship with Xiaodan and Malekh! Their dynamic is so nice, and Malekh especially is such an interesting character, he’s my love (though who am I kidding, they all are, the rest of their found family, too!). I loved watching them slowly learn to understand one another on such a deep level, it's soo sigh, queers

They didn't make it a shameful thing to be sexually intimate with each other, either! It's all very healthy and consensual (and hot, two of them a vampires!! (none of it is actually all that explicit but please still take this being an adult book seriously))

Then there are the topics of love and respect. Remy learning that he's worthy of love. One of my favourite tropes in media.

And I should probably mention that the vibes are immaculate as well. So is the magic/ science system (fantasy world building!)

I’m trying to hold back my rambles here, I meant to make this short, but oh well, here I am.

Mainly, what I’m trying to say is, if you like fantasy politics, and vampires, and fight scenes, and found family, and poly romance, and queer joy, give this book a chance! You won't regret it.

I wanted to like this more than i did? the writing and worldbuilding are a bit weak and i found the love story a bit frustrating. as a polyamorous love story i think it doesn’t avoid the most common pitfalls of poly representation, which occasionally creates an interesting tension but mostly feels repetitive and annoying; however, as a coming out story i think there’s some nice (uhh relatable) arcs. and at the end of the day… gay polyamorous vampires. i can’t be too upset.

i felt like i waited most of the book for
remy to fuck the vampires and then when he finally did it was like… okay?? and what else?? idk. lots of miscommunication and misunderstanding as plot that wasn’t super convincing and i spent a lot of the book feeling bad for remy for essentially being unicorn hunted in a very confusing and overwhelming way. also felt like the characters spent a lot of time talking about consent and then did not do consent
anyway i WILL be reading the sequel and i AM emotionally attached to the characters now and i HOPE the poly romance problems are explored more in a productive narrative way and also that every one is gay and happy :)

Silver Under Nightfall took me almost an entire month to read, however, this is one if my favourite books I've read this year! I honestly can't tell you why it took me so long but I can tell you I loved every single second. I did predict some of the big plot twists but that didn't take away any of my enjoyment at all. I absolutely just adored this book, I love Rin's writing so so much. I loved the humour, the plot and the characters it made for a fun and also hardhitting ride and I cannot wait for the second book!

I loved Remy as a main character so much! I wanted to absolutely root for him from page one, I felt so much sympathy and love for him throughout the book. You can tell he truly just wants to do what us right by everyone no matter what they do to him, or how they push him down he still wants to defend and make sure everyone gets out alive. He has such a big, kind heart and I love him so much. I love the fact he can also be super badass and the relationship between him and Zidan and Xiaodan I loved it I really did.

For me, it's really hard to pick a favourite character. At one point all three of them have been my favourite character but I'll go with Xiaodan. I love Xiaodan so, so much, she's so sweet and again so badass. I love the way you can see how much she truly loves Remy and Zidan. She really cares about her people, about the humans and everything she's been through with her mother and oh my god I just love her so so much. Also her ability is so cool I loved her from her first chapter all the way until the end she's special.

Of course, as hinted at, I also really loved Zidan. I had a slower burn when it came to warming up to him but again as with the other two, I fell hard. I love that he's of course so much more reserved but you can tell again how much he truly cares about both Remy and Xiaodan even though he shows it in different ways. Again, he's been through so much and I just want him to he happy by the end.

I think the author has built a really interesting world. I really liked the setting and also loved the politics of the Vampire courts!!! I really loved that only vampires who are old enough or important enough turn to ash I thought that was really cool, I thought the way Zidan's experiments work were really cool and the idea of the rot and how it was explored and how it kinda felt like an analogy for human life.

I really enjoyed the plot. I thought it was fast paced and liked that I was always learning something new. I'd like to dive more into the Vampire politics because I think some people were here just to read about the relationship but I care about all the politics and plot as well so I'm looking forward to seeing how they develop in book two!!! One thing, I really loved in this book was the way Xiaodan and Zidan treated Remy when it came the sex, how they knew he'd been so used for sex by other people so they wanted to make sure it never felt like that to them, God I love the three of them so much

Overall, I just adored thus book so so much!! An easy five for me and just inject everything Rin has ever written into my veins.

I enjoyed a lot of this book, probably most of it but in general I just felt like it was too long, there were some sections that dragged on for way longer than needed. Parts of the plot were a bit predictable but I don't think of that as something entirely negative, the author planted the seeds for those twists and in general I enjoyed the characters and their dynamic, so overall a good book.

The first few chapters are a bit hard to grasp, as theres a ton of new names, cities, etc thrown at you. But after that the story is incredibly immersive and you grow to love Remy and the other characters. I'm excited for book two.
