I actually had no idea what I was getting into when I picked this one up, just needed a queer vampire book for one of my reading challenges for the year. And I've enjoyed some of Chupeco's YA fantasy, so I was interested in seeing her foray into the adult fantasy world. For the most part, I wasn't disappointed!

There is some excellent romantic chemistry between the three main characters, and I liked the detective/mystery energy that the rot investigation brought. I do think overall, the book is a little longer than it needs to be because it feels like it drags a bit at the end. There's a pretty good hook for the sequel, so I might actually pick that one up to see where the story goes next!

My first read for the 2024 Trans Rights Readathon!

I really enjoyed this book! I love these characters so much especially Remy. Remy is a such a wonderful character I was instantly attached to him. His struggles with his past, feeling as though he owes his father everything, the way he feels that no one loves him without needing something from him in return. My heart hurt for him immensely.

The only reason Iā€™m not giving this book 5 stars is because of Zidan and Remys back and forth. How many times were really necessary to try and put something between them? I get it, in a way, it benefited Zidan and Remys characters to show some of their biggest flaws but at the same time it was kinda frustrating to watch it happen multiple times.

Overall I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the sequel!

This took me a little while to read this book.

I think the writing and the plot is great. I liked the small bits of romance sprinkled in and the more action packed scenes. But it just didn't keep me interested between those action scenes and the romance parts. But I knew going in this might not be entirely for me. Fantasy isn't a genre I usually read and I usually like for more romance to be included when I do read fantasy.

I would absolutely still recommend this to the fantasy readers out there. It just wasn't for me personally.

Ok so I really enjoyed parts of this. The problem is the main character kills me. He's so determined to have everyone dislike him and to take the blame for everything. It doesn't matter how many times people say "I'm not mad at you" he's like "I know you're mad and hate me now." Boy get it together. Take it from an elder emo. The side characters are so good though and the politics and the horror. Its just Remy fucking mopey ass Pendergast.

Starts off a little slow but it's absolutely worth it! I'm thoroughly attatched to these characters now, would fight the whole world for Remy, bye, I gotta go cry over them.

This is not a perfect book by any means ā€” the first third is a bit slow, a few words are misused, some of the twists were predictable and easy to guess, the ending was a little weak and rushed ā€” but it was the perfect book for *me* and my reading mood when I picked it up. Violent, sexy, and a whole lot of fun, it felt like the perfect blend of fantasy and romance with both horror and historical elements. The take on vampires is refreshing without straying too far from tradition, and there's enough mystery, political intrigue, and suitably creepy monsters to keep things interesting. Remy could be a frustratingly oblivious protagonist at times, but he's such a dramatic disaster bi. I really loved reading the dynamics of this bisexual throuple; the romance is surprisingly soft and warm (maybe a bit instalove-y, but I don't even care).

I am in DIRE need of the sequel though after that ending!! Also I wish we had the US cover in the UK, it's so much prettier.
