I'm settling on a 3.5 rating because I didn't love it. It dragged through the first third to half, and then only sped up because the structure went from covering several months to doing the highlights of several years. I spent half the book mad about Julia, or uneasy about her choices in relation to Alice. In the last third, though, that kind of went away. The ending was bittersweet but I do like how it tied the important things up while still leaving the reader free to imagine what might have come next.

I’m really not sure how I ultimately feel about this one.

I know this has been very loved in the Booktok and Bookstagram worlds, so I’m offering an unpopular opinion here.   And it’s also why I hesitated and waited so long to read it.

Ultimately I think I did enjoy this book.   But I didn’t really like it until about half way through.
I don’t mind a good slow burn, but this one took a long time and I was finding I was losing interest quickly.

I really liked the parallels to 𝙇𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣 and the complex relationship between William and the Padavano sisters, which is what I think kept me going.

I listened to the audio and Maura Tierney did a fantastic job narrating.

CW: depression, attempted suicide, abandonment, death of a child, terminal illness, grief, death of a parent

Wow, she does it again. An absolutely amazing book that I can’t recommend enough. A beautiful homage to Little Women that follows the ups and downs of four sisters in Chicago. Heartbreaking, full of love and forgiveness, I could talk about this book for hours.

Julia sucks a lot. I love Charlie and I see myself in William.

If you want to be annoyed by every character in a story until the last 20% of the book, this is the one for you!
