Solidly entertaining. Even though the plot boils down to "long sea voyage, followed by (what is essentially) a custody battle over a dragon". Still, it never got too bogged down and I wasn't ever bored. Reading these books is all about the vibes for me and apparently, a good Napoleonic sea voyage, complete with sea serpents, storms and knife fights is exactly what I'm craving right now.

Laurence and Temeraire :,) I think the pacing in this could have benefited from some more revision (lots of meandering across the ocean for the real conflict to all happen in the last 10%) but I enjoyed the expansion on previous characters from the corps and new additions across the globe. Temeraire’s crew is such a lovely found family and each new member we spent time with brought something special to the group; his affection for all of them has also grown so much. I’m excited to see where this goes with 8 more books and how Laurence and Temeraire’s international ties contribute to their standing back home.

+ Temeraire’s voice in this was I think the best dragon voice I’ve ever heard in an audiobook? Very unearthly but not just deep gravely growly nonsense. recorded books take notes!!

I loved the first book in this series, but this one just fell flat. I just never really cared what happened next. Which makes me sad, because I loved the first one so much.

I didn't enjoy this installment in the series as much as the first, but it takes place in such a cool location: China at the start of opening to the West. However, the natural wonder one should possess at going to a completely new place is undermined by a complete lack of curiosity by the narrator. Laurence doesn't try to learn new things or explore new places and he won't pry to find out about Temeraire's comings and goings so the story is lacking because of it.
