This is a grumpy/sunshine, fake marriage, slow burn, sports romance novel. Both of the main characters have childhood trauma and trust issues to work through. I really enjoyed the transformation of Aiden, as he opened up and became more comfortable with Vanessa.

Guys, I'm SO conflicted on this book!!

Was this book particularly good? No, not really. Was it absolutely addicting to listen to? Yes. Spent two days doing nothing else.

I love Aiden. What. A. Man. The quiet way he shows Van he loves her 😭😭 the way he stands up for her 😭😭 really had me sobbing ngl

Can't stand Van. She was so fun at first but then it just turned really pick-me and if there's one thing I HATE it's pick-me's.

Still, the relationship was so cute! Yes it was technically very slow burn but we all knew they were gonna end up together in the end and it made all the pre-relationship situations so much cuter for me.

Some other stuff I had issues with:
– Van's family gives major Cinderella vibes but not retelling vibes, Cinderella vibes straight out of the fairytale. Completely two-dimensional. Oh and why are they assholes? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, of course
– Aiden is groped/sexually harassed in front of Van and she laughs about it for like ten minutes. Ew.
– Van gets into sports! Theoretically fun but she only does it after Aiden's manager says she's fat. And there's so much focus on her losing weight, it became a bit uncomfortable

So – why did I even like this? I don't know. I like Aiden. I like puppies. I like "I loved you from the start". The writing is good.

Will read more Zapata books, trying to find a book as great as Lukov was xoxo

great trope but badly executed. look, i love a slow burn, but i was expecting more chemistry tension and build up, it didn't give me butterflies until the last chapter

Really endearing and cute. Loved the development of the main couple. Definitely a slow burn.

Quite liked this slow, slow burn marriage of convenience.

One pet peeve: For claiming she had multiple Canadian friends answer all her questions, she really does not understand β€˜Eh’ and how it is used in a sentence.  Drives me bananas when Canadians are written in a caricature like this.

Leslie beamed. "We finished watching some footage, so I'll get out your hair to give you both some alone time tonight, eh?”
The tender, amused look that came over Aiden's face more than slightly irritated me. "Eh." Aye.
Then the fact that his Canadian had snuck up on him - when it only came up in the times he was really comfortable - made my little-girl immaturity that much worse.

And

Clowns? "Really?" I tried to imagine a tiny Aiden crying over men and women with overly painted faces and red noses, but I couldn't.
The big guy was still facing me. His expression clear and even, as he dipped his chin. "Eh."
God help me, he'd gone Canadian on me. I had to will my face not to react at the fact he'd gone with the one word he usually used only when he was super relaxed around other people. "I thought they were going to eat me."

That… is not how that is used. Ok. Rant over.

Oh, Mariana. How I love this book ❀️

I adore a book where you feel all the feels.
We went through hating the grump football player Aiden, to tolerating him, yo understanding him, then loving him. 🫠

I do love when a dumb single minded (football) man opens up his eyes to see what is right in front of his face. πŸ™ˆπŸ‘€πŸ‘‹

Vanessa knew her worth and wasn't a pushover. I love that about her. Aiden was protective but let her do her own thing. πŸ₯°

I don't re-read many books, but this is definitely on the list πŸ’•πŸ’–
