I would say more 3.5. I liked it, but not enough to make it a 4. Although the origins of vampirism and zombie-ism are explained more scientifically, it is still basically and urban-fantasy. Maybe even a bit on the noir-ish side. I liked the main charactr well enough, but--I don't know, it just didn't light me up. The plot was pretty well put together. There were some fun twists and turns. I wish I had liked it better.

Thrilled by this series. Can't wait to start the next. I love a gritty lone wolf PI with a twist

Not bad. Very dark and the ebook formatting was awful, but overall not bad.

oh boy this one. first let me say i liked the idea of it, but the execution was not it. it took me 5 minutes of googling and searching through goodreads just to try to find it because i couldn’t even remember the name. what really killed it for me was the main character. he is so fucking annoying. his whole personality is just “oh everything sucks and im right and im some big tough guy who’s better than everyone else… blah blah blah”. so one dimensional and stereotypical. idk if that gets better as the story progresses but i have no desire to ever find out. not to mention the formatting of it just is so poorly done and throws you off, you often can’t even tell whose talking or where the dialog even is, ughhh. so in the wise words of tyra banks:

“It is so bad, I want to give you a zero, but that's not possible, so I give you a one."

"Well I hate vampire stuff but the last book John recco'd was good so I guess I'll try this" - Can't put the book down till finished reading 4 hours laters - "Uhhhh.. I guess I like vampire stuff now."

Cross genre mayhem noir thriller worth checking out even if you don't like vampire stuffs.

Hard. Dark. Brutal.

If you are looking for the typical vampire novel that seems to be so popular these days with love and sex and the like, don't bother with these. Huston has re-designed the vampire totally, set it down in present day New York City and made it totally his own. There are NO good guys. Even the protagonist isn't "good" but at least we know why he does what he does. He is a survivor and he does what it takes to get from today to tomorrow.

I really like this story.

Super nifty noir detective story where the investigator/narrator is a vampire. Joe Pitt is hired to find the missing teenage daughter of a wealthy family. He has also been tasked to hunt down a zombie infection.
Then there are the different vampire factions who want Joe to join with them. They are not happy that he has been on his own rogue status. He's not a joiner. He does his best to placate the various factions if only to get along in his undead world.
All this while trying to track down the missing girl and zombie infection.
Excellent voice-over quality with Joe as narrator. Neat take on the vampire virus and politics. A superb book to listen to.
Definite recommend.
