This is a Beauty and the Beast retelling with Thad, the MMC suffering from absolutely horrific battle scars thanks to a surgeon who was unskilled with needle and thread.

I liked a lot about this book and really LOVED the first 75%, but the conflict at the end dragged a little bit for me. I really wanted the MMC to STOP RUNNING AWAY after about the fourth time. I LOVED the FMC but she has far more patience than I ever would with this man who ran so very hot and cold with her.

Idk man there was inconsistencies in the story and good god Thane was so annoying. Every time he pulled away it was for the  EXACT SAME REASON. Like 4 times. So annoying. Astrid was also off putting in a weird way. She was Too Perfect. The reason she could work for Thane was weakly put in and the fact she was a feminist and so well educated ..... Idk I like reading flawed heroines. She and her dainty feet are boring. I also didn't enjoy the drama of isbel and Beaumont kind of ending off page? I suppose that will be discussed more in the second book.

Best part was Isobel - she who is an annoying little sister - and Mabel who's a total scamp. Kind of sussy that she sleeps with the paid staff though?

Sometimes a girl doesn’t need a hero to save her. Sometimes she needs the opposite.

I so wanted to like this one - a Beauty & the Beast retelling with a tortured, scarred hero falling for a shunned, take-charge heroine with trust issues - but overall it felt like a whole lot of...nothing. The same conflict between the two, recycled over & over & over. I also felt the tone was decidedly modern. Granted, I don't have much experience reading HR, but this lent to it just feeling a bit off.

Overall, dull & forgettable.

A Regency Romance, with Beauty and the Beast vibes.  Can be read as a stand-alone, but is the first book in a series that follows a set of sisters as they try to escape their money hungry uncle's marriage matches. Multiple POV's.

Thane, Nathaniel Hart, is the Duke of Beswick. Thane returned from war scarred and disfigured only to his have father die of a heart attack and his older brother die in a horse riding accident. This left him as the sole heir. With his scarring and miserable attitude, he earns the name the Beast of Beswick.

Astrid Everleigh is the older sister of the two orphaned Eveleigh girls. Having been taken in by their Uncle, the girls are now reliant on him to make their marriage matches. After Astrid is cast out of society due to rumors of her ruin, she sets her sights upon learning everything she can and protecting her sister.

I really enjoyed the banter and dynamic between Thane and Astrid. Astrid is a strong and independent woman who loves hard and takes care of her own needs and her sisters. Thane is dark and lonely man. They are constantly verbally sparring which is so fun to read. I loved the side characters and the world that Howard built.
