this is the kind of classic that makes me wonder why I haven't read it earlier, why it has been sitting on my "to-read" shelf for literally 10 years (though I'm glad I read it for the first time now rather than when I was 12), and that on one hand I want to devour the book but on the other hand I don't want the experience of reading it for the first time end anytime soon, a book that I can't stop thinking about in-between readings and after finishing the book.

Like the Titanic, in that the metaphor overshadows the story, but it's worth remembering that 1984 is in itself a terrific novel. Probably the best work of fiction by Orwell who was a much better journalist than novelist.

In the end, I think I'd prefer Animal Farm, but there's something both horrible and fascinating about this novel that has made it so I can't stop thinking about it even though it's long done.
