PERFECTO!!

I didn't think anything could make me love Hamilton the musical more. I was wrong. This book demonstrates the love brought by every person involved in the production through the six year journey to Broadway. Combined with Lin's footnotes and breathtakingly visuals, this book made its way to my multi-read list before I finished the first chapter.

**Read via audiobook at 1.25 speed. Had to slow it down to 1.0 speed when Lin adds in his authors notes at the end of the book**

This is an informative and inspirational read for all Hamilton fans. It gives backstories on the original actors and how Lin Manuel Miranda wrote/developed Hamilton. The perfect backstage pass! If you’re into that kinda thing (and I def am), this is a quick read you will enjoy.

I thought I couldn't possibly get *more* emotional over this musical, but oh boy, let me tell you: I was WRONG. This book is so well-crafted; images and anecdotes are interspersed amongst the artifacts of Lin's creative process as well as historic documents that feel just as significant to our nation’s narrative. Hamilton: The Revolution tracks the American Revolutionary War as well as the revolution that Hamilton brought to Broadway and contemporary culture. Hamilton is, as Lin famously says, "a story about America then, told by America now.” This is profoundly evident in every aspect of the production, especially the casting. Hamilton has created more opportunities for thespians of color, allowing for marginalized peoples to tell the story of America. This has impacted generations of theatre-lovers, showing adults and children of all backgrounds that they belong in positions of power, in the spotlight, and in this country. As for the music—come on, I couldn’t NOT write about the music—it is virtually “non-stop,” just like Lin and Hamilton himself. Lin’s portfolio is wide-ranging—including hip-hop, R&B, pop, rap and jazz, amongst other genres and hybrid forms. Reading his commentary gave me a deeper appreciation of the genius behind this masterpiece, and as a writer, I marveled at his storytelling capabilities. His poetic skills are off the charts; he checks every one of those boxes for literary devices. His research is impressive, and he harnesses it to humanize the founders who were vilified, deified, or forgotten. He writes complex characters with stunning arcs and dramatic plots rooted in truth. He makes history books appear fresh, and yet the show feels timeless. The themes Lin wrote resonate with the issues we see today—Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change. Hamilton continues to spark revolutions, empowering us to come together, to be ambitious, to tell our stories, to rise up. The book does the musical (and the mixtape) justice; it captures the spirit of the show and the voices of those who brought it to life. To pull a line from Angelica, "You want a revolution? I want a revelation." And here's my declaration: you should read this book.

As of this writing, I still haven't heard any of the musical. I thought the story behind it was really interesting, though. I was listening to the audiobook version, and was surprised that it was narrated by someone other than Lin-Manuel Miranda, which was a little awkward.

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA CAN'T POSSIBLY BE ANY MORE OF A GENIUS THAN HE IS NOW.
