It was good. I think her non-fiction books were better.

Disclosure: I literally only read this book because I saw it on the library shelf and felt compelled to read it in my last 1-2 months of being 29. This was no more than a light-hearted plot, written more so for 75 year olds than 29 year olds. Lots of complaining throughout the book & the plot was overall underdeveloped. Oh well!

I meant to read this before my 30th birthday a week ago, but oh well. If I could go back for just one day to a younger age now, I would probably pick a really young age that I can't remember being anymore like 5 years old just to remember what life was like back then, but would definitely not want it for more than a day.

This was honestly one of the worst books I've ever attempted to read. I say attempted because I could not bring myself to finish it. It is an over done plot line with unlikeable characters. What a bummer.. I was excited to read a book authored by someone I share a name with... bottom line, unless you find yourself a free copy, time to burn and absolutely NOTHING else to read, don't waste the energy of flipping these pages.

I absolutely loved the idea behind this book - a 75 year old woman with a grown granddaughter longs to be 29 again for just one more day. However, the execution felt rushed - this could have stood to be a little longer and a little more developed. That said, the characters were engaging, and I look forward to the inevitable movie on ABC Family.

** spoilers !!!! **

This was an interesting read. I am not 29 or 75, so I struggled a bit to connect with some of the things that Ellie was feeling. What bothered me the most about Ellie's approach to this whole adventure is that everything that she seemed to miss about being 29 was relatively superficial. I don't mean this in a judgemental way, but I lost track of how many times she mentioned her physique and her face and her hair etc. It left me wondering why she would spend the gift of youth going shopping and flirting and getting her hair done instead of going on a real adventure and skydiving or cliff jumping or something. Still things that most 75 year olds (not all!) might not be able to do easily, but impacting more than her physical presence. I don't know.

Spoiler My main takeaway after that is how selfish it was for her to mess with Zach. I understand the theme of thinking for herself and enjoying her day, but how the night ended took things too far. Kind of a strange fantasy that I didn't need to see fleshed out.

I also know we were supposed to be annoyed with Barbara, but for me she was just too much. Even with the backstory and such I almost stopped reading because of the way she was treating Frida. Borderline elder abuse?? Almost couldn’t finish the book because of her.

I did LOVE Lucy though - the scene with her and Ellie negotiating with the department store was my favorite.

Overall this book was a bit too fluffy / superficial for me. A few redeeming moments, but not enough for me to recommend it to others.

picked up at a little-free-library in IL and later returned to the same library in IL.

Great beach read. Funny and silly, but sentimental.
