Another school-based chapter book I read (in 2003 I was deciding if I wanted to major in children's literature or teaching)... I thought this book had an OK, yet predictable plot. I found the school-based novels by Andrew Clements or Wayside stories more funny; but the girl in this book reminded me a lot of when I was a student.

This is a small book filled with short stories about the Herdmans - the worst family in town. Beth's class has been tasked with thinking of one positive characteristic about each person in their class by the end of the year, a task she finds impossible with Imogene Herdman in your class. This book contains vignettes of Beth's struggles throughout the school year to notice Imogene's good side. Does burying a dead snake that you brought to school count as thoughtful? Does standing for the pledge of allegiance every morning count as patriotic? Beth will keep thinking...

This was a fun book with cute characters. It definitely makes you think about finding the best in everyone and highlighting peoples' attributes instead of their flaws.

I wish I could put 3.5 stars. It picked up for me toward the end.

In this follow-up to The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, the Herdmans return, sans church drama. Instead we have school drama, which doesn't amuse me quite as much. Nevertheless, the kids' antics are still amusing and we're still left wondering about Imogene's true nature.

When I finished reading this book aloud to my 3rd grade students most students gave it 5 stars.

Here's why students and teachers can enjoy this book. It's funny! It's full of moments that will get the kids groaning, laughing, and shrieking with surprise.

The kids love the Herdmans and who wouldn't they are memorable characters.

I found it to be a great read aloud for my students for the beginning of the year because it gives a great kid perspective to school and encourages kids to think about the good in everyone just like Beth (the narrator has to with the Herdmans).

However, this can't get 5 stars, only because [b:The Best Christmas Pageant Ever|239810|The Best Christmas Pageant Ever|Barbara Robinson|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1173031155s/239810.jpg|1632383] is even better and the best Herdman story.

A worthy read and much better than a lot of the children's dribble out there!
