3.5 stars but rounding up because the Lamar Valley is one of my favorite places on this beautiful planet. This one was a little slow until it wasn’t - and then it rushed to a somewhat unsatisfying end. But this whole book felt amazingly atmospheric, and not just because of Heller’s superb nature writing. For me, the way Heller presents Ren’s contemplation of his past and present felt true to way it memories arise and flit away and we process the emotions tied to those experiences.

The writing in this nature-set mystery was solid, but I didn't find myself very caught up in the story, unfortunately.
