Mehhh. For a book that I've been meaning to read since I was in elementary school, when I finally got around to reading it with my EL410 class, I was decidedly unimpressed. The dialect of the narration felt unnatural. I wanted to see more change in Jem and the prince, but I guess I felt that less than 100 pages wasn't enough room to convincingly show me the development of their respect for one another. Also, what the HECK was the point of Betsy and Petunia the dancing bear?!?
Wish I could've read this when I was 7 or 8...

I totally forgot about this book. I read it so so so long ago, I remember sitting behind my father's dentist office, on the water, watching ducks and reading about this HORRIBLE little brat Prince.
A very good story.

This was just okay. It didn't leave much of an impression, and I think the same would be true if I'd read as a child. I was expecting more from the story. It was a cute adventure with a nice moral, but it was just a little flat - perhaps because it was so short.
The rats were gross.
I wouldn't recommend this, there are better books that are for children, early chapters books, as well as Newberry winners.

I thought this was going to be another sorrowful book about slavery. I am glad I was wrong.
Yes, there was sorrow. And, violence. It all turned out well.
Still working my way through Newbery winners. B.F. Hamilton Library takes good care of me by having all these in its collection.

Definitely quite possibly the most awful book I’ve ever had to glaze my eyes over. Thoroughly disenjoyed
