I re-read this little gem because I planned to see the movie. I haven't seen the movie yet but the book was just as good as I remembered. It is a sad account about the haves and have nots, and sadly much of the social lessons are still relevant in today's world. The characters are both shallow and complex, relatable and distant. Definitely a must read.

I can totally see how this will be a Baz Luhrmann movie! And I think I very well might enjoy it as such. This book was not was I expected at and despite the fact that it is considered to be a classic novel, it was not my cup of tea. I found this book difficult to follow and frequently had to look back to figure out what was going on...perhaps some people like this but not me. That being said, the book did intrigue me enough to finish and figure out what happened to The Great Gatsby.

A tragic story of illusions, excess and loneliness. The Great Gatsby was a book I’ve always meant to read and finally did. Not sure it’s quite my cup of tea. Grandeur and tangled webs are Gatsby’s downfall, reading it made me consider what the important things in life are.

This is my second time through this book and I have to sat that it was even better than I remember. The prose poetry alone is enough to give this book 5 stars, but the implications of what Fitzgerald had to say about America and the tragic story of selfish and utterly detestable people is one of beauty. I agree with others who believe this to be one of, if not the, great American novel of the 1900's.

Unfortunately it really is That Good. I don't side with people who think this book is God (most of whom don't really seem to understand it), nor do I side with the people who write it off as "required reading" and "dead white men lit" (most of whom, I suspect, could not name 1 classic written by a person of color). But the writing is killer and the tragedy is enchanting so.
