A tale of identity, wanting to belong, and a wildly rampant imagination. If it weren’t for the painstakingly inconclusive ending, this would be a 5 star book for me.

Definitely a different writing style than I'm used to reading currently, took me a little while to adjust, but you can see why this book is a classic!

It lives up to being a classic

Based on the premise of the main character being a successful sociopath, I thought I was going to practically fall in love with Tom, or at least inappropriately admire him. I did not. I hated Tom just as much as he hates himself.

Also, EXTREMELY different from the movie. Basically diametrically opposed in every respect save the characters’ names.

“You were supposed to see the soul through the eyes, to see love through the eyes, the one place you could look at another human being and see what really went on inside, and in Dickie’s eyes Tom saw nothing more now than he would have seen if he had looked at the hard, bloodless surface of a mirror. It was as if Dickie had been suddenly snatched away from him. They were not friends. They didn’t know each other.”
