I just loved the way the author wrote it. All of the descriptions contributed to the overall ambience of the book. You could actually feel the emotions and situation that the characters are in. I love Leigh Bardugo. It was in fact triggering but it wasn’t a problem for me.

I loved this SO MUCH. Had me gasping and going insane. I did have to remove one star for the rape stuff, it wasn’t enough for me to stop reading the book but it was definitely upsetting and impacted my reading experience a lil bit. It’s not gratuitous or long or anything but I’m sensitive to that subject so it made me pretty uncomfy. Not sure if it really needed to be in there but it’s an overall dark ass book so it’s not out of question. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and I’m so hype to read book 2!!!

350+ pages before a plot point materialized. Brutally and painfully slow and once it finally comes together, it’s not like it all wrapped up together and all of the loose ends got tied up at the end. The end just throws a handful of bits and bobs in and tries to make it make sense.

The final quarter of the book really saved it for me. I really like Leigh Bardugo’s writing and the premise caught me. However I think that since the bulk of the novel is put together like a crime-thriller story, it didn’t work for me for a while. I did absolutely find myself to drawn to Galaxy and her story, and overall invested in her success. It gave me Legendborn vibes which is a big win in my book. However with that ending I am definitely going to be moving on to Hell Bent in the coming months, I just think I need a little break from the universe.

This was my first true dark academia book and that was the wrong genre choice for the reading slump I was in.

This book took me an entire month to finish because my brain was not prepared for the amount of plot that was about to develop.

The premise is interesting, a girl with a supernatural ability to see ghosts is recruited by Yale’s elite societies to watch over their rituals. She was an outcast growing up and impoverished so seeing a group of people interact with the supernatural world to make the rich richer is a harsh awakening.

Here’s where I started to struggle. The development of Alex and her story is perfectly executed. Her character NEEDED to be a desperate, paranoid person in order to push through all the plot points the author was developing. Also, the amount of different moving pieces made it hard to get into the book and difficult to wrap the story up. By the time I was able to understand the importance of the group that was supposed to oversee all the rituals, it felt like the rules were changing. Then by the time I caught up again, this 450 page book wraps up with more twists in the last 50 pages.

I could have thoroughly enjoyed this story if the author would have broken up what she wanted to accomplish in additional books. But will I be back to read book 2? Yes. I need more Darlington, it was criminal that he wasn’t in more of this book.
