This is not a book to read, but much more to study. The chapters are short, but very insightful, providing a very good guideline on how to finally take those first steps into creating something new. And once those first steps have been taken, there are many more recommendations on how to continue them, until finally finishing that project you've dreamed of for the longest time. Well worth reading, and definitely a good push to get something going.

My mother, who passed her procrastination gene down to me, gave me this book. While it has some nuggets of advice about becoming the artist/writer you've always dreamed you could be, the author's overall war metaphor and reliance on the divine made much of the book an unoriginal bore to get through. There's really nothing new or original here; you must do the thing in order to do the thing - you must write if you want to have written, preferably on a schedule that enables you to slog through all the resistance (key word used often in this book) and actually create anyway. Skip this and go read Stephen King on writing or pick up The Artist's Way if you want/need a hardcore program to follow.

I dunno. The main idea is ok, but the author successfully undermines it with a lot of insights so bad it hurt my brain. Read a summary and spare yourself some time.

7.5 or 8, can’t decide

The nature of the book should be empowering (and it was, at times) but there were some parts that were just straight up boring and…odd?

I really appreciated the chapters that talked about fear and criticism, and I really liked the perspective that resistance and fear can help guide us in knowing what our path is (pro-tip: if you fear it, then it’s the thing that you must do)

The only reason why I didn’t give it that high of a rating was because of the last halfish or so. It kind of felt like the Author was just stretching to reach more pages, especially during the discussion of hierarchical versus territorial. There was also a lot of confusion about the difference between a muse and an angel. Are they not both the Divine? I don’t know.

What I found odd was the part about Hitler supposedly being a painter (?). And if he tapped into his creativity, he would’ve been. And if he was a painter, then, well…you know how the story goes. I thought that was odd. And the claim that certain mental disorders aren’t real was also odd. The book could’ve done without both claims tbh

I get what this book is supposed to be. Inspiration. This is pages upon pages of ramblings from someone that I cannot identify with. I do not agree with his philosophies and I cannot get on board with his ideal system.
He talks a ton about resistance, and while what he speaks of is real, his methods are - vapid.
There is no advice here either. Pray to the muse? The world is full of angels?
This book has been helpful to many, and will likely continue to do so.
For me, this is quickly in my recycle bin to try to get a couple of bucks and get something I will actually enjoy reading.
