The distance he was able to achieve- the ability to view his life through an unbiased lens- is the biggest strength and weakness of this book. Strength in that it produces the clearest and most comprehensive account of Auschwitz-Buna camp operation, daily life, and subsequent liberation and repatriation i’ve read- and weakness in that it distances the reader from the narrator. Levi’s prose is amazing and exacting (and the translation is phenomenal), and his observations of people he meets are fascinating and so in-depth. No one can review this man’s experiences and trauma- my rating is simply my personal reading experience.

Contains two books and only If This Is a Man is on my reading list for Oxford. If I have time, I'll come back and also read The Truce!

An incredible book about one of the worst periods of human history, harrowing, sickening, shocking to read of Primo Levi's experience as a jew in Auschwitz until it's liberation by the US forces. It must surely be essential reading for all of man kind so we don't allow this to happen again
