This book was absolutely seductive; the perfect mix of fantasy and reality. The writing felt muddy at times during scenes of tension, but was beautifully descriptive everywhere else. Zhang seamlessly weaves themes of race, poverty, environmentalism and Scientology with queerness, feminism and sexuality.

This short big runs deep and wide. It’s a lot of things… Dystopia, Socio-political commentary, Satire, Gastro Horror, Loss of a Mother story, and a cautionary tale regarding climate collapse, how we change food and food changes us and change is inevitable.

It’s not as bad as the content warnings might suggest but it tries to be for brief moments. Is this why Ron Charles hated this book? I enjoyed it

Just wasn’t for me, wasn’t what I expected. I did not like any of the characters, a lot of the food that was cooked sounded disgusting. There was a lot of descriptions of food that was being thrown away and wasteful.
