Very fond of this book and the storytelling but something is holding me back from five stars. Some lack of connection to it but as I took my time reading this, through sickness and vacation, I suspect it could move to a five star after a reread which I am already planning.

Stands the test of age quite well. I had loved it as a teenager. I still like it once grown up, unlike many of the books I loved as a teenager.

One of the greatest adventure novels and revenge tales ever written. Read it. Do not be intimidated by its length it is incredible.

This book is BY FAR the greatest fiction work I have ever read! I get so tired sometimes of stories that are just so shallow and predictable...like watching a movie. This book was a little hard to get into at first because it throws a lot of french names and terms at you that are hard to understand and remember, but once you get past the first few chapters and start to figure out who everyone is, it draws you in. I remember several times in this book getting to what I thought was the climax of the story and expecting the book to end soon, but then at the same time being profoundly confused because there were still SOOO MANY pages left to read! The plot twists and turns and loopty-loops in ways I never in a million years would have predicted. I fondly remember this book as the one which always had me scratching my head in wonder thinking "what can possibly happen next?!". Just read it. You will not be disappointed.

Too many subplots that do not add to the central theme. First third of book was good but them it became a bunch of dead end stories.I was very disappointed.
