In this fourth book of Lady Trent's memoirs we get to follow her on her journey to the deserts of Akhia, where she and her friend Tom have been hired to try and breed dragons. A dream project for natural scientist Isabella, but, as usual, she's counteracted for merely being a woman. In addition, someone seems to want to sabotage their project, and she's reunited with a dear friend...

"In the Labyrinth of Drakes"... The title alone almost has me jumping for joy! And I'm not let down in the slightest; this book is at least as good as the previous ones! It has been three years since we last met Isabella, and we finally get the story about how she became known as Lady Trent. Between her research she keeps getting in all sorts of unpleasant business: kidnapping, poisoning and arson. She also does something she said she'd never do - she remarries!

this was probably my favorite installment of the entire series. there was a lot more emotional development and exploration that really drew me in, so the writing was much more my taste. it also finally answered a question that was pretty much spurring me to continue reading the series at all
i.e. suhail being lady trent's enigmatic husband!! the romantic development between these two was just so wonderful and enjoyable for me
. the continued scientific and historical studies and discoveries were interesting as well -- i think there was a good narrative balance in this book overall, as i found the earlier installments quite dry. this was definitely scintillating memoir material.

I just really, really love this series. I don't really have anything particular to add for this book. If you've liked the series until this point, chances are you'll like this one too. My main complaint is still that I wish it would hit on more of the colonization aspect of things, both in terms of research and - now that it's becoming more of an element in the story - archeology. But while I think the story would be better with it, it is by no means bad without.
