Wow! I was blown away. I loved this story so much, I found myself crying more often than not. It is such a beautiful story about history and remembrance, and how we need it to find ourselves. I loved this so so much. It was incredibly written and just addictive to listen to. I'm so glad I finally got to it.
This is a new fave and the first fave of the year.

Yetu

This story delves into a captivating premise, centered around Yetu, the protagonist who carries the memories of her people— similar to mermaids that descended from pregnant African slave women cast overboard by slave owners. Yetu grapples with the weight of her gift, experiencing the emotions and pains of her ancestors firsthand. Overwhelmed by the burden, she embarks on a journey to escape her destiny, navigating the complexities of her identity and the legacy she carries.

I really liked the concept. But the action seemed slow, and it felt like it was missing a real arc.

short but powerful - i took away from it a reflection on the place of history in our day-to-day life, how much we owe to the past, how much the past should influence us today, and of course overlaid on that is how slavery impacted the history, lost or otherwise, of so many. really like that it's "based on" a song and the author's note about the evolution of art in different hands.
