This anthology does a wonderful job of showing how many different experiences refugees across the globe have. It also asks pertinent questions about how we view people who flee their home countries and those who leave due to poverty. It discusses loss of identity and what we can lose when assimilating and what is expected of refugees in their host countries. A really important read.

It seems rude to give a low rating to a book containing first hand stories from refugees. I guess what I didn’t like was that all/most the stories were provided by people who were placed in a new country at a very young age, all/most from affluent families, and all writers in their own right. This seemed more of a book to show that the term refugee includes these successful people too. Also, the stories were disjointed and some of them actually too poetic for me to understand what the author was trying to say.
What I did like was that the writers came from all over the globe, not just a book from a US perspective. Some authors ended up in Canada, England, or other countries accepting refugees.
Overall it was an interesting read, but if I were to only read one book on the refugee situation this year, it wouldn’t be this one.

What a great collection of stories showing a wide range of refugee experiences. These non fiction stories show the good, the bad, and the ugly about what being stateless really means. A must-read for anyone who has never had to worry about citizenship.

This is the kind of anthology I buy to support the cause rather than to really read. The pieces are slight, and a direct response to Trump era rules. Still, there are some good writers in the collection, and all of the stories are moving.
