3.5 stars & spoilers ahead!

The book did not end up turning out as I expected (in the sense that the issues in the book disappointed me). After the flaunting reviews here on goodreads, my expectations were again very high.

Not that it was a bad book, just that the twist were predictable for me. I felt Karin was pushing the reader in a direction very early on that would arrow towards the twist.

The book was a real page-turner though! Up to 52% of the book, I was sucked into the story despite knowing roughly the twist. Still, deep down I was hoping it was going to contain another dark plot. Here I did grieve a bit at the end of the story....
There are mainly 2 stories running side by side in this book of which a tiny bit connects the 2 stories. Both the plots I was unfortunately expecting...

Despite the predictability, the story did sit extremely well in terms of characters and emotional weight. You know when you read Slaughter's books that they are often not just about mystery, but there is often a part about character development with love or family tragedy. That also often makes me quickly reach back for her books!

Overall, this book falls roughly in the middle for me of all the books I have read by her.

I felt like some parts were redundant and some were confusing. But I loved the relationship between Lenore and rusty and rusty and the daughters and ben and Charlie

I loved this book! The storyline and plot twists are gripping and keep you guessing until the very end. I throughly enjoyed the jumps between past and present timelines and reading from both Charlotte and Samantha’s points of view. It was an emotional book where family bonds and secrets are looked into and strengthened whilst an ongoing criminal act and subsequent police work is carried out. I really enjoyed the character development and the female protagonists in this story.

FIRST FIVE STAR READ OF THE YEAR and i think this might be my favorite read from thriller/mystery genre, the fucking writing style, the characters, the relationship between the sisters and the dad omfg i have wayyy to many emotions to write a full review so this is mostly rambling, this my first book by karin slaughter and she didn’t disappoint, her writing make it seem like they are real, real human beings experiencing this tragedy, i honestly might go cry after finishing this review
