A fair second book in the series. The writing is great... The romance and heat were on fire. My problem with this is the ethical relationship. She's a thief... He's a Bow Street agent. Because of this, it started very slow for me because I kept trying to figure out how the author would make it work. She did but I was still bothered by it. However I will still look for the next one in this series.

Thank you to the author and publisher for providing my copy via Netgalley.

Couldn’t get into it, seemed very obvious from the beginning and lacked nuance. Told rather than showed.

ARC Provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
It was very hard for me to get into the book. Reason 1: The difficult names to pronounce throughout every other sentence affected me understanding where the sentence was going.
Reason 2Alex and Emmy attraction should more of a focus than the political talk of war or what kings and queens are doing. This is Alex and Emmy’s love story, no one else.
Reason 3: from location 400 up was a jumble of words and sentences that made me lose interest in the book.

Another great story by Kate Bateman! She has quickly become an auto-buy author for me as I love everyone of her books that I've picked up.

This story is focused a jewel thief called Nightjar and Alex Harland, a Bow Street agent, is going to solve the mystery of who Nightjar truly is. When he keeps crossing paths with Emmy Danvers in his investigation, he starts to feel things he hasn't felt in a while. Emmy has secrets and with Alex on the case, she knows she is in danger of being caught. I loved the way the relationship was developed between these characters and the chemistry is great.

If you're in the mood for a historical romance with solid characters and an interesting story, check this one out!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the review copy.

I kind of struggled getting into this book. I just didn't like Alex or Emmy. I didn't feel the connection with them at all. Emmy has loved Alex for years. She steals a kiss at a masquerade ball and while Alex is off fighting he thinks of that kiss. Okay so I like that part. I don't like that Emmy is a criminal and that Alex is in charge of finding her. I just didn't like the story arc.

It was a short read and it was somewhat enjoyable. I loved the first book in this series so i will absolutely continue with the series.

Okay, the heroine is really inconsistently written and honestly, if they both liked each other from the beginner, I don't buy the enemies to lovers angle that was kind of shoved in there (I don't think it worked), but the sex was sexy and the plot was strong, so I'm still here for Kate Bateman. Bring on the final book in the series!
