I think the relationship was developed pretty well, and it avoided most of the icky BL tropes. It wasn’t quite what I expected storywise but I did enjoy it

This might just be me, but this series is something special. The art is beautiful and alive, and the story was conveyed well and spoke to my emotions fast enough to pull me in (there was no saving me!). Bittersweet and to the point, but it isn't totally tragic. It's rather inspiring for something so ordinary. I'm invested to see where Mao and Hisashi go from here. They all feel genuine (and not just...leaning into the trope, I can't put my finger on how to define that 'line' just yet). Personal bias: I'm looking forward to learning more about the director, Ichikawa. Haha. When I say, 'I kick my feet up and giggle,' this is the most genuine response I can share.

I definitely re-read this since learning about the anime adaptation in summer '24.
