4.5 rounded up to 5.

I initially put this as 4 stars but after a little think have bumped it up.

This was my first dip into Fromm, and a small slice of his writing a lá this book was just right. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. The insights on love and placement in broader cultural and popular psychological theories was a delight to read, without any heavy jargon laden dialogue. The short sharp ideas around love, the art of love and the practice of loving were, for me, exactly on point. There weren’t any brand new ideas in here for me but I’m realising a lot of what I’ve read previously was probably founded on how Fromm presents. The whole masculine/feminine ideas were a little dated (same sex couples don’t seem to be a thing for Fromm) but other than that a real delight to read and a book many would benefit from.

Fromm's vision of love is clear and unique, if not in its content then in the precision with which he lays out what love is.

An interesting work. I enjoyed it and found much to think about in "The Practice of Love" chapter.

I could have just read the last chapter of the book. I should have kept in mind that I was reading a book published in the 50s, some of Fromm's statements were difficult to digest now.
