Well this one is dark. I thought it interesting to have listened to the author’s post-word where she describes her book as being as close to what could have been as she could. It was pieced together from historic excerpts and a little bit of creativity based on the true story or serial killer Belle Gunness.

The narrator, Bella, is selfish and it’s hard to get over my dislike of her character.

Somehow fun and empathetic while also being gristly and tragic - it’s a worthwhile novel for true crime fans although I was disappointed to learn that a lot of the facts remain unknown.

A slow paced book a sped through! Bruce slightly “humanized” (in the sense that I wanted to know WHY) a serial killer, extremely impressive! I think Nellie as a sister/character does a great job of paralleling the emotional side of what loving a horrid person can be like. Having her perspective changes made the book more raw for me, I think it made the book a more well-rounded story instead of just pure tragedy and anger on the side of Belle.
