I was frustrated that a book that, on the surface, is a staple of feminist reading, is actually far from it. Elizabeth Taylor’s life was told through her marriages to men and as a socialite, or as a victim to poor health. Where is Liz in all of this? The Steinem chapter was better, but still didn’t really read like a feminist wrote it. Even RGB’s chapter started as a reflection of the death of her husband and “best friend on the bench”. Ugh.

Great read/listen. Includes more than the usual women you typically hear about. Laced with just enough shade to make me smirk throughout.

Witty, well-written, and inspirational. A quick collection of essays that gave new depth to plenty of women I’ve heard of, and some I haven’t. It’s a treat to yourself to read this.

Well. This aged poorly. It opened with a tribute to J.K. Rowling, who has since come forth as an unrepentant TERF outspokenly against any kind of truly intersectional feminism.

“Okay,” I thought. “That wasn’t widely known at the time of publication. I’ll skip that chapter.”

What then followed were several examples of extremely white USAmerican hometown heroes, in which the author sets her Difficult Women ™️ against other, presumably lesser women, who have different life experiences and goals. Because we all know the best way to achieve true equality is to tear down other people who don’t meet our own lofty standards.

Gave up at chapter 4. If there are gems of wisdom in later chapters, I do not regret missing them.
