I LOVED IT SO MUCH. THE ENDING WAS CRAZY. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE BOOKS ABOUT WOMEN BEING WOMEN AND HAVING FEMALE FRIENDS AND LIVING THEIR LIVES. SO. GOOD.

I really liked this book, stayed up multiple evenings to finish it even. I like following Lila and Elena’s friendship over so many years and reading about all the interpersonal dynamics (while having the character list to refer back to).

Female friendship at it’s strongest. Elena and Lila are so wonderful and well-written. Their lives change and they grow but their loyalty and friendship is strong. The other town characters  become confusing and irritating as the chapters go on but a great narrative and brilliant author. Got me out of a reading slump!

She captures close female friendship throughout childhood and adolescence in such a perfect way, I was completely absorbed by this book! Deducted a star because of the ending, which I absolutely could not believe. Read this in 3 days as it was borrowed, but I think I would have read it this fast even without the time pressure!

Notes:
- I feel like this one lacked a larger array of in-depth characters and was a bit slow for me to personally be overly invested.
- However, really raw writing style which was so amazing to read — created vivid imagery and really served to match its themes of violence, emotional violence/intensity and how these tied into the main female friendship.

Really interesting and you can’t stop reading it once you get into it, that being said it did take me about 100 pages to get into. There’s a ton of characters, which is confusing at first but by the end you are interested in all of them and their relationships with one another. Ended at a suspenseful point that really left me wanting more, so now I can’t wait to get the next book which I hope expands on the sort of romantic aspect of their relationship (unless I’m reading that dead wrong.) At certain points I wished the narrator was more self assured, but when she was more confident during the summer chapters I felt really happy for her. I think it is a really excellent portrayal of a super complicated friendship between two women.
