Lovely, clear writing, and fantastically interesting. Prequel to "Winter Tide". Eager to read more.

Good intro to the series and an interesting premise and continuation of a Lovecraft story.

This is the prequel to [b:Winter Tide|29939089|Winter Tide (The Innsmouth Legacy, #1)|Ruthanna Emrys|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1463670456s/29939089.jpg|47306624]--a novelette, I believe. This was the push I needed to just fall in love with the world Emrys created. It made me love Winter Tide more and made me want to read the second (third?) book in the series. It's just a great portrayal of religion and exile and found family. These books also gave me a new perspective on the horror of Japanese internment camps, which is maybe...unexpected... but also this is how I internalize and understand history the best. It's the whole "reading makes us more empathetic" kind of thing.

The ending was a bit abrupt as I wanted to see more of Charlie's advancement in magic and of Aphra's discovery of cults. I guess I will have to read 'Winter Tide" is discover more...

This was an absolutely fascinating short read. I've had several conversations with friends who are aware of weird fiction and cosmic horror about how at least for Lovecraft, his complex and fascinating mythos as well as his description of the truly Other arose FROM his thick xenophobic racism as opposed to in spite of it. I've seen many attempts to rehabilitate Lovecraft from his opinions, which I believe misses the point. We wouldn't be reading him if he hadn't been such a monster.

That said, The Litany of Earth is an excellent revision. Sure, The Shadow Over Innsmouth is a classic, but we didn't really learn anything about the horrifying fish-people of Innsmouth. Emrys corrects the record and gives us insight into why these people choose to worship omnicidal eldritch horrors: not because they're evil, but because they possess the long view.

Practically perfect in every way. Have not felt this excited about an author in a long time.
