Partials is the second books I've read from Dan Wells, the other being "I am not a serial killer". Both of them have made the same impression on me: they are books with a good plot, good (not amazing) characters, but for some reason they didn't really catch me. I finished Partials more to just finish it than to know what happened in the end - at some point I stopped caring.

That being said, I think I will -someday- continue reading this series, at least the second book (Fragments) because I think that the premise is interesting and I'll be at some point hooked up with Dan's writing.

2.5 stars. Too many contrivances for me to get really involved in the story.

Is this like every other YA dystopian book? Yes. Does that make it any less good? No.

Not every book needs to be mind bending or life altering.

I probably won’t read the rest of the series but I thought it was different and interesting. I thought the world building was done really well. The explanation of the virus and the pre-world before this world was created was done well.

I really liked Kira. I didn’t think she was the typical annoying MFC. I thought she was strong and smart. She didn’t drive me crazy with boy drama or stupid decisions. She’s driven by curiosity and understanding of the world around her.

When sixteen-year-old Kira was a small child, the world fell apart. The "Partials"--genetically engineered human-like creatures that were created to fight mankind's wars--revolted against their makers, destroying nearly every human being on the planet. Most of the people who weren't killed in the initial war succumbed to a deadly virus released by the Partials. Only the few who were immune survived, and now they huddle together on Long Island. The Partials have left them alone for more than a decade, but the survivors have another devastating problem--not a single child born since the Partial War has been immune to the virus. Not one has lived more than a few days. Kira, who works in the maternity ward of the hospital, vows to find a cure someday. When her best friend becomes pregnant, however, Kira's goal takes on new urgency. She decides that the only way to discover a cure for the virus is to go to the source--the Partials. But venturing into their world might disturb the fragile peace that exists between Partials and humans...

This is one of my favorite recent sci-fi novels. The premise makes sense to me, unlike several other teen dystopias I've read lately ("Pandemonium" and "Fever," I'm looking at you). The characters and their internal struggles ring true and I connected with them right away. Kira is having a hard time figuring out what she believes: Should Congress do whatever it takes to ensure that humanity survives? Or should individuals retain some of their rights, even if it means risking the survival of the human race? Kira's debate with herself gave me a lot to think about. There's almost nonstop action and a nice twist at the end. Good stuff all around!

So much political commentary and scientific descriptions... just not my cup of tea. I like character development (there was some) and intrigue and action. This was fast-paced and good coverage of a scientifically advanced dystopian society. The biggest con, what I can't get over, is how a main character was killed in the heat of battle and all he got was one line ("He's dead."); no one lamented his death, no big deal was made over it. Just odd. However, a lot of the political commentary was spot-on for what our country and its youth are facing today.

My advice to anyone reading is that it finally picks up in the second half. That's what saved it from me giving it 1 star.

Sloooow paced at the start.
The only thing that happened in the first 135 pages is a messed up salvage run, Kira realising the Partials' blood has never been tested to see if it's the cure to the disease, and Kira hatching a plan to capture a Partial.

Awful main character.
Kira is meant to be the most talented virologist this society could produce and yet she didn't know that, sometimes, immunity to a disease doesn't mean your body can destroy the disease, it means that your body can live with the disease without getting overwhelmed. The arrogance this girl shows is ridiculous. She shits on her boyfriend - and lets her friends join in too - for no obvious reason. The way she makes herself feel better after rummaging through the wreckage of a bomb explosion only to find body parts is to change into shorts so she can show her legs off. Which is about the time a mistake in the printing makes it seem like her friend Xoichi is having a conversation with herself. There were other printing mistakes, smaller things like extra speech marks or ones that weren't put in. Nothing major, but it was still quite annoying.

Don't like the author's style of writing.
Overkill on the descriptions. He breaks up every conversation to insert huge amounts of description and that just breaks the flow of the conversation. It's jarring. Also don't like how he ends every chapter with a cliffhanger only to not continue on from it at the start of the next chapter. Also jarring.

Foreseeable plot twists.
SpoilerWhen she gave no actual reason why she didn't wanna use her own blood for the tests she did into RM, and she used her boyfriend's instead, it was pretty obvious that there was something different or super special snowflake about her. And then she kept healing super fast from everything.

Ridiculous cliffhanger ending.
Though that's standard in YA series these days.

I was promised no love triangle. Lies.
SpoilerIf Samm doesn't develop into a proper love interest in the next book, I'll be shocked.

I watched Terminator 2 at a very young age. (Why 2? Because it is obviously the superior one) I think that it made a huge impression on me. It single handily created my love of sci-fi. In Partials the enemy might not be straight up robots but I was just as intrigued by genetically engineered organic beings. Throw a plague in on top of that and you definitely have a book I must read. I went into Partials with high expectations…maybe they were too high because I loved a lot of things but I also had a few issues with it.

The concept is brilliant. I loved everything about it. I’m always fascinated by post-apocalyptic settings and this one was done really well. I found the Partials to be interesting, although they didn’t necessarily live up to the scary hype the characters built for them. This might sound odd but I enjoyed the plague aspect of the story as well, but the chapters where Kira was just doing medical tests and experiments were very, very tiresome. I didn’t mind it at first but it goes on for a long time. This leads me to my first issue, I feel like the book could have been much shorter.

I didn’t love the characters, but I didn’t dislike them either. Samm was probably my favorite. He was very mysterious. I liked him from the very start. I’m not sure if I was supposed to, but I found him very sympathetic.

I also guessed a big secret plot point within 20 pages. Then it seemed like it took forever to be revealed. I don’t usually mind if I figure things out quickly but the pacing was fairly slow and I got pretty impatient at times.

I still enjoyed the story. I loved the world building and the overall concept of the story. I wish the pacing could have been a little faster but all in all I enjoyed the book. I’m definitely going to read the sequel. I think it will be even better!
