This book was as much an ode to life as it was to death, and to the wonder of both. It longs for a perfect past, but has little to say about the future. It is enjoyable and wholesome.

Firstly, for the Christian reader, this book is not theologically accurate in any way. It is loosely based upon Genesis and the Garden of Eden. Comparing it to C.S Lewis is a very false correlation. That said, if you are going into it reading it as pure fiction, you won't have issues.
I'll start with the pros of this book. The descriptive imagery, and the beautiful character work. I absolutely loved Butterfly, Crow was my second favorite.
Unfortunately, I found myself constantly asking "but why?" the motives of some characters I was confused by and much of this book had me asking questions that never got answered. The villain of the story seemed like a cookie cutter, cliche', mustache twirler and it bothered me. The thing is, through most of this I also felt like Adam was a villain too. He was so violent and the impulse was never explained. I equated it to the fall and the first murder by Cain, but that was just me trying to fill in gaps that I needed something, anything for the author to give me explanations to motives.
The ending did sum up nice, it actually answered one of my questions, but I still have so many "but whys?" about motive in the story. I gave it a 3 stars because it was beautiful writing, just not cohesive enough for me as a reader.
