Loved it. Had a bit of everything in it and there was some things I could see coming and others that caught me by surprise. Amazingly written, I found it hard to put down.

There was a detachment to the writing that left the entire story- the history the book is set in and the affair between an older, married, Protestant man and a young Catholic woman- feeling bland and dispassionate. The affair made no sense to me apart from it being another situation of an older man in a position of power taking advantage of a young woman--although I got no sense that this was what the author was trying to do with the love story. The historical setting doesn't get the attention it deserves, but/and the affair is unremarkable without the setting.

Something about the voice put me off this otherwise excellent novel perfectly grounded in place and time about the Troubles. It’s that very voice that the reviewers who loved this book are lauding. But its flatness on top of the bleak subject matter wore me down. Many readers will love this book, and perhaps I was just needing something a little less depressing. It reminded me of Milkman (without the experimentation and humour) and Shuggie Bain (without the hope).

The romance, although important to the overall story, tends to drag it down. But the ending is well done, making up for any flaws along the way.
