While a pretty good book, I HAVE to disagree with a review on the back: “...reads like a modern-day spy thriller.” It was not very thrilling as it wasn’t told like a story and instead was a presentation of facts. Noting wrong with that, I still enjoyed it.

I actually really enjoyed this! Not a ton of substance but I kind of preferred that to a super dense nonfiction tome. I was looking for a book on the Culper Ring since I don’t know much about it, and this fit the bill perfectly. It makes me want to binge watch the AMC show Turn as a result, but I think that’s a compliment to the book!

Surprised by how compelling and informative a read this is. Written as a story and not only as a dry list of facts, readers will find this an interesting addition to their Revolutionary War libraries.

“Washington did not really outfight the British, he simply outspied us!” - Major George Beckwith

A fast paced thrilling read about a little known spy ring that played a large part in Washington outsmarting the British. I loved the structure and story telling of this book. We learned who 5 out of the 6 spies were and the roles they played. One agent is still unknown (agent 355). The authors did a great job including an afterward in the book that included research on her many possible identities. Highly recommend!

One of my favorite historical-fiction books, The Secret Six follows the espionage adventures of the Culper spy ring, one of the first rings ever documented, and the foundation upon which the CIA was built. Very insightful book that unearths mostly unknown facts about the first American war for independence.

My Dad and I listened to the audiobook on a cross country trip. We made it about 3/4 through before we gave up. The way the material is presented it is impossible to follow along. There are so many characters and events that are introduced in rapid succession and in non-chronological order that it was utterly confusing. The author is also the narrator, and you can tell that narrating isn't his forte. I have no doubt that this story is incredible, but I will have to find some other mediums to ingest it all.

A tremendous story told by hypothesizing non-historians. Very few references, and invented dialogue that makes the book nearly fiction.
