this manga is full of antisemitic dogwhistles that more readers should be aware of. the entire premise is deeply antisemitic and calls upon both new and old stereotypes to fill its world.

to start, it's known that in the real world, historically, women that were persecuted for witchcraft were often Jewish. in this manga, witches agree to work in the shadows behind society's elite in order to escape persecution and further the (often evil, selfish) goals of political figures. the page on which this is explained has a close up of a witch's necklace, which depicts the Star of David.

the witches seem to be based in Germany, and while they are shown to be blonde haired and blue-eyed, the way their eyes are drawn often gives them a slit-pupiled, reptilian look. "lizard people who disguise themselves as humans and control the world" is a relatively new but popular antisemitic conspiracy started by known bigot david icke.

finally, it is revealed that one of the most powerful witches, the founder of the school that the main characters attend, is now a demon. she has dark hair and narrow, slit-shaped pupils. the mangaka held off on giving her horns (a common antisemitic belief is that Jewish people grow horns. yes really. there are Jewish people in my millennial generation who have had people ask to see their horns.) but that's a small comfort given everything else.

it is impossible to separate the world of this manga from its antisemitic foundations. I do not recommend this yuri, and if it is one that you enjoyed, I encourage you to do some reading on antisemitic dogwhistles as well as the current number of hate crimes acted against Jewish people this year and in previous years. the rates have been increasing as antisemitism flourishes online and in the current American political sphere. it would be irresponsible of me to praise this manga or recommend it in any capacity. honestly, I think it is irresponsible for this to even be sold in bookstores.

there's a lot more yuri licensed in America now. pick up something else that doesn't have such heinous political teachings.
