I really enjoyed this book. I've never read anything by Tony Hillerman before but I'd love to learn more about these two cops.

More Leaphorn. More Chee. A partnership made in heaven? Well, I guess we will see.

In book 8 we FINALLY get the boys together on a more permanent basis. It's going to be good. Leaphorn is in mourning at the loss of Emma and wants to retire, but the job just keeps pulling him back in. Chee is still wet behind the ears, idealistic, and his own man. We are chasing illegal pot hunters (as in pottery, not the plant) and murders abound.

Hoping the "full moon" plot thread doesn't get dumped in the next book. Curious to see what happens there. A good mystery, as always. 3 stars.

I found the book very slow to begin but then got in to it half way through once the mystery started to unfold. However, the ending is incredibly abrupt which I didn’t enjoy.

Thus far, this is the best of the Leaphorn-Chee mysteries from Hillerman. Excellent plot, fast paced and pretty much keeps you guessing to the very end. Love that he included a map of the area so I could plot the movement of the characters, plus it brought back memories of traveling through Monument Valley, Bluff, Medicine Hat, Kayenta and other towns.

Tony Hillerman brings us another Leaphorn and Chee mystery which unites the unlikely duo in an investigation spanning centuries.

When a ceramic collecting anthropologist mysteriously vanishes and two sadistic murders transpire near an archeological site, Leaphorn and Chee find themselves unraveling the various tangles which interlink both cases.

But mystery follows mystery until a third murder unearths ghosts from both the anthropologist's and Leaphorn's past threatening to upturn what the police believes about the unexplainable vanishing and homicides plaguing the Navajo reservation.

Hillerman's fast flowing prose greatly augments this thrilling novel which concludes with an astounding shock! One for the ages.

My first Hillerman book, on my shelf all these many years. A very good mystery read, set in New Mexico, with an excellent bit of education in the culture and anthropology of the Anasazi.

I am (more or less) reading this series in order. As the page count goes up (confidence in publisher), I am finding the mysteries more involved. How many ways can the white man come to impact the Navajos on their reservation in modern times, and what impact are they making? This one explores the nuances and angles of the study of, and theft of, artifacts (pots, specifically).
