I was physically exhausted from reading this book, and I'd have DNF'd it if I wasn't reading for school. Paragraphs took up whole pages and wore me out, there were far too many semicolons and ellipses mixed with ineffective swearing, the word 'peremptory' was used too many times, and the style of prose was exactly the opposite of what I like. The pacing wasn't enjoyable, and uninteresting parts dragged out while some of the more shocking, intense events were taken care of in two sentences. Overall, it made for a disappointing read.

Troublant et délicat sujet que voilà. Le roman est assez court mais interpelle dès les premières pages. Le style de Khadra est élégant, sobre mais raffiné, il a le sens de la métaphore. On suit le récit d’Amine (écrit au présent) avec intérêt et émotion, on partage ses angoisses et ses interrogations désespérées. Comme lui on cherche à comprendre l’incompréhensible, à expliquer l’inexplicable. Son drame est aussi l’occasion pour lui de revenir à ses racines, de renouer avec son passé, son peuple. Mais cela suffit-il à comprendre le geste fanatique de sa femme ?

Despite having to put up with occasional prejudice as an Arab living is Tel Aviv, Israel, Amin is a successful surgeon, prosperous, and happily married. One day he is awaiting his wife’s return from a weekend at her grandmother’s house when a local restaurant is bombed, killing 20 people including many children who were attending a birthday party. Amin works into the evening operating on the victims, only to be devastated to learn his wife is among the dead. The local police show up with a search warrant for his house and claim his wife was the suicide bomber responsible for the carnage. This is a very emotional, thought-provoking but accessible novel and I enjoyed reading this a lot.

Емоционална книга с дълбок размисъл за хода на живота между хората на база политика, религия и националност. Главният герой доктор Джафаари е арабин интегриран в израелското общество като успешен хирург с дълга кариера зад гърба му. Всичко това се променя когато съпругата му очаства в атентат където тя се самовзривява убивайки 17 човека. Ролята на съпругата в романа не я представя като жертва а я признава като някой когото е взел това решение (със или без рационална мисъл) и застава зад нейното решение. От страна на хората които са я замесили в тяхната организация, те я признават като герой и мъченик за тяхната кауза, разкривайки ни техния радикализъм довел до това поради действията на израелците против палестинците. Романа представя процеса на доктора преминавайки не само от приемане на смърта на неговата съпруга, но и как той започва да разбира защо палестинците посягат към оръжия и бой за да се борят за тяхната свобода. В първата част на книгата той преминава през фазите на тъгата и приемането на смърта на съпругата му, разкривайки психологическите ефекти на тъгата и приемането на смъртта й. Неговите колеги и приятели от работата му се опитват да му помогнат да приеме случилото се и да продължи напред но в края на крайщата доктора трябва да премине през това сам. През целия път който минава за да разкрие хората зад терористичната група, той се връща в неговия роден край където след всичките мъчения през които той преминава той се предава на съдбата. Той е изморен от света около него и омразата която той усеща от двете страни, че той не може да бъде приет като израелски гражданин, нито да бъде напълно приет обратно в неговия край защото е считан за предател, раздвоявайки го между тези две негови личности. Накрая За съжаление, няма да може да се постигне разбирателство ако едната по силна страна не спре боя и насилието срещу другите. Доктора мислеше че може да живее в израелския свят като игнорира предубеденията и дискриминацията срещу него, но нито това нито насилието и боя срещу тези които са негови врагове няма да му помогне затова той

shocking tale placed in the midst of the Israel-Palestine conflict; a lost-love story, literally. I find first-person narrative little difficult to identify with.

Le parcours d'un homme à la recherche de celle qui fut sa femme, sur fond de la folie destructrice des hommes. Un livre qui interroge, bouleverse et remets en question notre façon de voir certaines choses. Bourré de passages magnifiques et touchants. A lire absolument.
