This books was, for the most part, infuriatingly STUPID. There were too many plot threads that just went nowhere, the characters were frequently doing and saying the most aggravating things, and don’t even get me started on the “mystery” aspect of this book. 

Too many times, I found myself screaming obscenities at ALL of the characters. I would be more interested in learning about the magic systems and the clans of witches, but the author already struggles with how some things work in the real world, so I’m not positive they would have a great grasp of making the magic systems believable. 

Also, the audiobook narrator’s pronunciation of “forward” drove me crazy.

I wanted to love this *so* badly and i'm just so disappointed. No character development, no emotional pull, cringey and formulaic dialogue, constant references to trauma and emotional turmoil with no real effect on character or plot, boring character stereotypes...just so many issues. The premise is so good, but execution was just poor.

I gave this book 4.5 stars. It kept me engaged and interested. What happens close to the end broke me heart and had my tearing up. I definitely want to continue the series with the second book to see what happens! It was a great start for spooky time :)
