As much as I love psychological thrillers, I also love any fictional book that has been well written. This book hooked me with the characters right away. More than that, there were moments in the book that were prolific and so heartfelt that I teared up a few times.

I grew to like this book more and more as I got further in. It’s very sad, fair warning, but with enough humanity to keep it readable. I think the author did a really good job of keeping what could have been a more involved story simple.

First, I have to say that I thought this novel was beautifully written. Based on the blurb, I thought it was going to be at least somewhat plot-driven, but it’s definitely more of a character study. The characters were well written, and I related to each of them in one way or another. The novel is written from multiple points of view, and the author does not believe in chronology. You’ll be in 1985, then find yourself in 2010, only to go back to 1985, before jumping ahead to 1999, 2014, 2020, and back again. In other words, don’t get too settled into a time period. Oh, there’s also a touch of the supernatural, which I was not expecting. Did I like this book? Yes. Is it going to stick with me? Actually…I think yes.

I liked how the themes of family, grief, and trauma were explored through the different characters at various points in their lives, but I know this won’t be a very memorable read in the long run
Graphic: Dementia, Pandemic/Epidemic, Death of parent, Alcoholism, Grief, Car accident, and Death
