I loved how this author explored the difficulties of motherhood and being a woman in general through a sci fi lens. The pace was slow at times, but I feel like it was intentional so we could get to know each character well and understand the unique struggles each faced. I'm hoping my mom will read it and give me her opinions on motherhood and how she may or may not have related to the feelings in this book.

The author set up a lot of cool concepts but didn't really know how to finish them. The whole vampire kids thing was kind of underutilized and basically disappeared in the last third of the book. I liked the reflections on motherhood but the book waffles between those & whodunnit thriller moments so the whole thing just feels disjointed. Had things I liked, but didn't execute them well enough for a higher rating.
Also the audiobook narrator's "child voice" is so grating and annoying that it genuinely made me consider DNFing. I may have liked this more if I'd read it instead of listening to the audiobook

What the fuck.
Concept is fun, writing is engaging, different perspectives and characters are interesting. Metaphors are a bit heavy handed but the messages are memorable if nothing else. Overall enjoyable quick read, would recommend, but as I said before:

I listened to this audiobook narrated by the incredible January LaVoy, and her performance was fantastic. I actually checked to see if there was more than one narrator because her character voices were so distinctive. If I could give her 6 stars, I would. Just a really superb, high-quality audiobook. The novel itself was a fascinating take on the high standards that mothers are held to by society, told in the most unique way. This is definitely not your typical murder mystery. Big Little Lies meets...Dracula? A fun book to add to your summer reading list.
