I'd read other novels in the Temperance Brennan series and have always enjoyed Temperance herself. The storylines are intriguing, filled with murder and mayhem, and without a doubt, Dr. Reichs knows her stuff. But....and you knew a but was coming, what was up with all those side plots? Tempe's here to figure out this mystery, but no, now she's there, and now she's over there, but wait, now she's over there. Just felt like there was a lot of fluff in between the thrills.

Dr. Reichs knowledge is impressive, but when I'm reading a thriller I don't need to read a meticulous assessment of Tempe's investigation. At times it felt like I was reading a case study every time Tempe investigated a crime scene, was in the morgue, or in her lab. I just started skimming.

I could of overlooked the above and given the book at least 4 stars, but there were two things that drove me crazy and lowered my enjoyment in reading this book. The gimmick...Tempe would bring up something and then it would be 100 pages before we found out what that something was. And the ending, so anti-climatic. After everything Tempe's been through (as well as the reader), it's all wrapped up in a few pages. Just like that...here you go, here's the ending.

I find Tempe fascinating; her job, her life, her world perspective (and I love her cat!). I just wish the mystery and her role in solving was a larger part of the story with fewer tangent side stories. I'll probably give one of her later novels a try.

A stellar second outing to the literary version of Dr. Brennan. I admittedly don’t remember much about the initial book that started it all, but I found myself enticed by how vivid the world is drawn by the author. At times it can feel long winded, and maybe we could have cut 20 or so pages, but ultimately it’s a thrilling read to see all loose ends tied up in the final act!

Revisiting this book has been an absolute joy! It's amazing how much I enjoyed it just like the first time I read it. Despite the hard moments, they added depth to the story, making it even more impactful and emotionally resonant. You can't help but feel the journey in your gut as the characters unfold their tales. Highly recommend for those seeking an unforgettable reading experience!
